Electric Motorcycle Maintenance: Whats Different from Gas Bikes?

Electric motorcycles are really neat. They zoom zoom along, with no gas required, like an ordinary motorcycle. But did you know that they require some TLC to stay a well-oiled machine? But today we’d like to introduce some tips to take care of electric motorcycles, so we can continue to have fun on them.

But understanding the electric motorcycle application can help us ensure they perform at the highest level.

Electric motorcycles, unlike gas bikes, do not have engines that require oil changes or spark plugs. Instead they rely on batteries that have to be charged. Which also means that we want to pay special attention to our bike’s battery and keep it charged for our next trip.

Figuring out how to maintain electric bikes, however, is a bit trickier — but with a little knowledge, you can keep your electric bike in top shape.

One of the challenges is ensuring the battery doesn’t get too hot as we ride. The battery can cease to operate properly if it overheats. We can help it out by not taking long spins in boiling weather and parking our cycle in the shade when we’re not riding it.

"Tires are the easiest strength to check," Mr. Orlando said, along with regular tire pressure checks as maintenance tips for running your electric motorcycle.

Like with gas bikes, the right tire pressure is important for a smooth and safe ride. We can take a tire gauge, and make sure that our tires are filled to the correct level. If they are too low, or too high, we can add air, or let some out, until the pressure is just right.

Other key maintenance differences between gas and electric bikes also extend to brakes.

Electric motorcycles also utilize regenerative braking to decrease speed and recharge the battery. And that means we need to take particularly good care of our brakes and make sure they are functioning well. To check them, simply apply gentle pressure to the brake lever while spinning your wheel slowly and they should respond smoothly.

The road ahead of maintenance for electric motorcycles is as bright as the technology itself. For the last few years, electric bikes have been fast, but have generally struggled up steeper inclines. This could mean even more fun and exhilarating rides on our electric motorcycles. With some care and love though, our bikes will look better for longer.
